On August 27, the Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Zhejiang Shuren University was featured in a special report by China Global Television Network (CGTN) for its innovative practices in integrating artificial intelligence with traditional Chinese medicine. The feature, themed “AI Helps Traditional Chinese Medicine Expand to SCO Nations,” not only showcased the University’s active role in promoting the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine, but also underscored how AI technologies are injecting new vitality into TCM and providing strong momentum for its expansion onto the global stage.
Chen Chaoxiang, Executive Vice President of the Institute and Secretary of the CPC Committee of the School of Information Science and Technology, noted in the interview: “The hardware can accomplish 'See, hear, ask and feel' and store massive data for analysis. They not only assist doctors in making diagnoses, but also help people in self-prevention. The report also highlighted the University’s collaboration with scholars from Belarus. Professor Sergey, Academician of the Academy of Europe as well as the National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering of Belarus, remarked that the system has been introduced to Belarus and is being applied on an increasingly wide scale.
University-Industry-Research Synergy to Meet the Globalization Needs of TCM
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) accounts for nearly half of the world’s population, with health and medical care cooperation becoming a crucial goal among member states. Against this backdrop, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as a treasure of China’s traditional medicine, is attracting growing international attention and recognition for its unique diagnostic philosophy and clinical efficacy. Nevertheless, challenges remain in areas such as international dissemination and standardized application. Leveraging its deep insight into the modernization and internationalization needs of TCM, Zhejiang Shuren University, in partnership with Hangzhou TCM Brain Company, established the “Institute of AI for TCM.” With technological innovation as a breakthrough, the Institute serves as an efficient bridge for advancing TCM’s “global outreach.”
AI Innovation: Tackling Key Challenges in TCM Dissemination
In practice, Zhejiang Shuren University leverages the advantages of AI technologies to empower Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from multiple perspectives. On the one hand, by applying big data analysis and machine learning algorithms to vast collections of classical TCM texts and clinical diagnosis and treatment case studies, the University extracts core diagnostic patterns and advances the standardization and digitalization of TCM theories. This approach addresses the traditional challenge of “experience-based” transmission and makes TCM concepts easier for SCO member states to understand and adopt; on the other hand, AI-driven innovations such as the Renowned Physician Heritage Robot, the Brain Suwen Large Model, and the Brain Yunhulu TCM Multi-Agent System provide healthcare practitioners in SCO countries with precise theoretical references and strong technological support. These tools help lower the threshold for clinical application of TCM and promote its standardized integration into local healthcare systems.
From the SCO Forum to CGTN: Advancing the Global Reach of TCM
At the 2025 China–Shanghai Cooperation Organization Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Forum, hosted by the National Development and Reform Commission this May, Zhejiang Shuren University came into the spotlight as its collaborative achievements with multiple scientific research institutions from Belarus and other countries were featured at the forum’s opening ceremony. This appearance reflected the University’s long-standing dedication to deepening the integration of industry, academia, and research, and served as a showcase of the progress made through collaborative innovation with international partners. The recent coverage by CGTN echoes that earlier recognition at the SCO AI Forum, further underscoring the University’s consistency and continuity in advancing the internationalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
