Rehabilitation medicine is an emerging comprehensive medical discipline formed in some European and American countries around the Second World War and rapidly developed internationally. Centering on the study and solution of functional disorders, it serves for people with functional impairments caused by injuries, diseases, congenital disabilities or degenerative diseases of the elderly, aims to improve their quality of life, to achieve the comprehensive rehabilitation of the sick and disabled, and to enable them to reintegrate into society, which conforms to the needs of economic development, social progress and the transformation of the modern medicine, and is also one of the symbols for evaluating the level of national spiritual and material civilization. In order to support and foster the development of this discipline, the Ministry of Health has sent several visiting groups abroad to study and research the work of rehabilitation medicine since the early 1980s. While actively exploring and learning from the advanced experience and development concept of international rehabilitation medicine, the Ministry of Health required health administrative departments at all levels to attach importance to and support the development of rehabilitation medicine in China. In November 1986, the establishment of Zhejiang Association of Rehabilitation Medicine was officially approved.
