Interdisciplinary Research Academy 65th Environment Day Event - Exploring Key Laboratories, Immersive Experience of Technological Charm

On the morning of June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, the “Zhejiang Province Key Laboratory for Pollution Exposure and Health Intervention (Incubation) Open Day Event” jointly hosted by the Interdisciplinary Research Academy of Zhejiang Shuren University and the Zhejiang Ecological Environment Monitoring Association was successfully held at the Interdisciplinary Research Academy. Nearly 30 participants, including executives from Zhejiang Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment’s Science and Finance Division, industry leaders in ecological environmental protection across the province, technical experts, as well as faculty and students from relevant universities, attended the event.

Liu Weiping, Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Academy at Zhejiang Shuren University, delivered a welcome speech and provided an overview of the key laboratory. He emphasized the significant role of the key laboratory in the field of ecological environmental protection and expressed hope that this open day event would help more people understand the laboratory’s research work, thereby contributing collectively to the construction of ecological civilization.

During the event, visitors, guided by the academy’s faculty, toured the Environmental Health Joint Laboratory, the Spectral Characterization Joint Laboratory, the UV Spectroscopy Teaching Laboratory, and other facilities. They learned about the principles and functions of various analytical instruments and experienced firsthand the power of technology in advancing ecological environmental improvement. Special attention was given to the issue of microplastic pollution, with a live demonstration of infrared spectroscopy for microplastic detection. The clear and accessible explanations, along with effective demonstrations, provided the visitors with a vivid understanding of the latest ecological environmental monitoring technologies.

The event also invited Associate Professor Yang Fangxing from the College of Environmental and Resource Sciences at Zhejiang University, who is also the Deputy Director of the New Pollutant Monitoring and Management Committee of the Zhejiang Ecological Environment Monitoring Association. Professor Yang gave a popular science lecture on “Thoughts and Practices of Effect-based New Pollutant Monitoring.” He covered topics such as the sources and types of new pollutants, their characteristics (challenges in management), and solutions. Additionally, he engaged in lively interactive discussions with the audience on issues related to the biological toxicity of new pollutants.

In addition, volunteers from the university’s Green Environmental Protection Association also participated in the event. They set up environmental awareness display boards and organized a quiz with prizes at the Interdisciplinary Research Academy to promote environmental knowledge and raise awareness among the attendees.

The successful hosting of this event not only showcased our university’s key laboratory’s strengths and achievements in the field of ecological environmental protection but also provided a platform for people from all walks of life to understand and participate in environmental protection. In the future, our key laboratory will continue to leverage its advantages to contribute more wisdom and strength to promoting ecological civilization and fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
