President Li Lu Taught the “First Lesson at the Beginning of a New Semester” for the Students of Shulan International Medical College
“Good morning! Today, I am your teacher for the first lesson at the beginning of a new semester, the Introduction to Medicine.” On the morning of March 8th, President Li Lu walked into the classroom of the junior students majoring in medical examination technology.
“Which came first, the doctor or the medicine? Where did medicine come from? What is medicine as you understand it?” President Li first asked students three questions and introduced a brief history of medicine while interacting with them. Based on the timeline of the process of medicine developing from the theology of God to the philosophy of nature, he guided the students to know Asclepius, the God of Medicine in ancient Greece, Shennong, the Yan Emperor in ancient China, Leonardo da Vinci in the Renaissance, and Hippocrates, the originator of medical science, and so on. Reviewing the questions at the beginning of the class, the students were no longer confused.
In the class, Li Lu emphasized the problem of “how to face the digital era for medical students”. “Students should think about whether they can integrate medical technology into the applications in our daily lives at home.” This is President Li’s sincere advice to all future doctors.
“President Li’s words made me realize that medicine is not only about treating the sick and saving people, but also closely related to the society, culture and economy.” Song Jieli from Class 211 of Medical Examination Technology realized from this lecture that in the context of the continuous development and improvement of the new quality productive forces, medical students should continue to improve their ability of interdisciplinary integration and development to adapt to the increasingly complex and diversified needs of medical science.
Li Lu also introduced to the students the efforts and innovations made by the Medical College in the technical and academic fields. He hoped students to master the knowledge of multiple disciplines and promote the integration of interdisciplinary disciplines. Medicine is a science, but at the same time, it is also a human science, and doctors treating patients is also an art. At the end of the class, President Li said, “Medical science is closely related to the Book of Changes and an art to be understood and appreciated with the heart; the doctors need to have the spirit of selflessness and master excellent medical skills”.
