From July 10th to 12th, 2023, the “Advanced Training Workshop on the Monitoring and Risk Assessment of New Pollutants”, was successfully held in the Gongchenqiao  Campus of our university, with the financial support of the 2023 Provincial Advanced Training Program for Professional and Technical Talents and Agilent Company. This is one of the 2023 Provincial Advanced Training Programs for Professional and Technical Talents organized by Zhejiang Shuren University and co-organized by the Zhejiang Environmental Monitoring Association.

On May 24th, 2022, the General Office of the State Council released the Action Plan on the Control of New Pollutants, which kicked off China's battle for the governance of new pollutants. The General Office of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government also issued the Zhejiang Provinces Work Plan on the Control of New Pollutants on December 30, 2022. In order to explain the current situation of new pollutants governance to new pollutant treatment industry of this province, and discuss the hot spots and pain points of the industry, this workshop, lasting for 3 days, was held with the theme of new pollutant monitoring and risk assessment.

From July 10th to 11th, there were 6 high-level theoretical lectures delivered in the academic lecture hall of the university. The first lecture on the morning of July 10th, was given by Prof. Chen Jun, Vice President of Zhejiang Shuren University, the theme of which was “The Current Status and Development Trend of the Treatment of New Pollutants”. President Chen introduced the treatment of new pollutants to the trainees in details from four aspects: the understanding of new pollutants, the treatment of new pollutants, the basic ideas, the technical development and the market analysis of the treatment of new pollutants in China. He also combined the experience of his research group in the bio-degradation of pollutants over the years, and profoundly explained that pollutant control is the last barrier to protect ecology and peoples health.

On the afternoon of July 11th, Prof. Liu Weiping, Dean of the Interdisciplinary Research Academy of our university, gave a speech entitled The Management of New Chemicals in China and Abroad and Our Work", introducing the definition of new pollutants, the process of the international concern about persistent organic pollutants, the management of new pollutants in China and the achievements of the research group in this field in the past 30 years. The trainees benefited a lot from his persuasive views and arguments, especially on the aspect of human health risks caused by new pollutants.

From the afternoon of July 11th to the afternoon of 12th, Liu Jinsong, Director of Zhejiang Ecological and Environment Monitoring Center, Prof. Pan Liang, Dean of the School of Environment of the Zhejiang University of Technology, Prof. Liu Jing, Director of Institute of Environmental Health of Zhejiang University, Prof. Niu Lili, Assistant to the Dean of the Interdisciplinary Research Academy of Zhejiang Shuren University, gave wonderful lectures respectively on the topics of The Monitoring Technology System of New Pollutants”, “The Analysis Technology for New Pollutants”, “The Screening and Assessment Technology for New Pollutants and Its Prospect” and The Environmental Risk Assessment Methods for New Pollutants.

On July 13th, the organizer arranged the practical operation, which was a special feature of this workshop. This part was organized by the Analytical Testing Center and the Center for Demonstration of Basic Teaching of Chemistry and Biology (hereinafter referred to as “the two centers”) of our university. Nearly 50 trainees were divided into two groups, under the guidance of six teachers, i.e. Rao Guiwei, Liu Shuren, Guo Zili, Mao Shuduan, Sheng Yingfei, and Wang Yanting, to operate the analytical instruments for new pollutants in the No.9 and No.10 Buildings of the Interdisciplinary Research Academy respectively. The instruments used included ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS), comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCxGC-MS), Fourier infrared micro-spectrometer (IRT), laser infrared Imaging (LDIR), pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC).

In addition, the trainees also visited the Center for the Preparation of the Standard Substance of New Pollutants of our university, where Dr. Han Yulin, Executive Deputy Director of the Center, introduced in detail the progress of the Center in the preparation of the standard substance of new pollutants in the past year.

This workshop was held successfully, which not only highlighted the strength and level of our university in terms of policy understanding, scientific research, monitoring ability and supply of standard products for new pollutants, but also built up a pioneering position of our university in the province's new pollutant control, and provided the sample of Shuren for promoting the development and implementation of controlling new pollutants in our province. Taking this workshop as an opportunity, the Interdisciplinary Research Academy of our university will implement the “organized scientific research” to be more focused on research in the future, and contribute to the realization of our universitys goals of quality improvement and upgrading, application for the masters degree programs, the famous university run by non-governmental sectors, and the establishment of new medical science.
