On the morning of September 18, Professor Zheng Shusen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a renowned expert in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, once again graced the lecture podium of Shulan International Medical College to deliver the first lesson of the course Surgery to undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine (Class of 2022). This marks the fourth consecutive year that Academician Zheng has persisted in personally teaching the first lesson of this course.

Drawing on over five decades of clinical experience, Academician Zheng illustrated the essence of surgery through vivid case studies, emphasizing that excellence in the field requires not only technical mastery but also a profound sense of responsibility toward respecting and safeguarding life. He detailed the anatomical structure of the liver and current advances in liver surgery, using real patient cases to vividly explain various liver diseases, and to transform abstract knowledge into concrete comprehension. Students listened attentively and took careful notes throughout the session. One student remarked after class, “Academician Zheng has shown me that a true role model is a scientist like him, someone who saves lives in the operating room and serves the people with expertise and compassion. This has clarified the direction I want to pursue in the future.”
The college has always maintained a policy of ensuring 100% of professors teach undergraduate courses in class. The first lesson of the Surgery lectured by Academician Zheng embodies the college’s commitment to the concept of “Three-Whole Education” (whole-staff, whole-process, and whole-aspect education). While delivering theoretical knowledge, Academician Zheng stressed that clinical students should complete “clinical exposure early, in-depth clinical immersion, and repeated clinical training.” The course Surgery exemplifies the college’s effort to build high-quality programs, curricula, and faculty.
The academician lecturing in the undergraduate classroom offers not only a dynamic medical lesson but also an on-site ideological education lesson. Academician Zheng’s personal journey in medicine serves as a living educational resource. This lecture planted the seeds of scientific aspiration and patriotic sentiments in students’ hearts, reflecting the college’s determination to promote development through evaluation and foster high-level applied medical talents capable of contributing to national rejuvenation. Here, the words and deeds of the academician converge with the aspirations of young students, joining forces to contribute to the nation’s health cause.
