President Li Lu Led a Team to Visit the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau and the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong for the Promotion of Our University

In the afternoon of 13 March, President Li Lu led a team to the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as the “Innovation and Technology Bureau”) and the Research Grants Council of the University Grants Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Research Grants Council”) to introduce and promote our university. Mr. Sun Dong, the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, and Mr. Wong Yuk-shan, Chairman of the Research Grants Council, met with President Li Lu and other visitors respectively.

At the Innovation and Technology Bureau, Secretary Sun Dong introduced the main functions of the Innovation and Technology Bureau and analyzed the advantages, opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong's innovation and technology development. He believed that Hong Kong had the advantages of being a highly international city, strong in basic scientific research, a free economy with a global reputation, and a central city in the Greater Bay Area in terms of innovation and technology. At present, the Innovation and Technology Bureau is making efforts to develop towards the four directions of "improving the innovation and technology ecosystem and promoting Hong Kong's 'new industrialization'", "strengthening the talent pool of science and technology and enhancing the driving force of development", "promoting the development of digital economy and building a smart Hong Kong", and "actively integrating into the overall development of the country and providing a bridge between the Mainland and the world", and actively implements eight development strategies. President Li Lu introduced the achievements of our university in discipline construction and scientific research in recent years, and explained in detail the new strategy of the interdisciplinary integration development of medicine, engineering, liberal art and management, with the construction of new medical disciplines as the driving force. And he hoped that through the introduction of the Innovation and Technology Bureau, our university would develop deeper cooperation with more universities and scholars of scientific research and technological innovation in Hong Kong, and jointly serve the national innovation-driven strategy.

At the Research Grants Council, Chairman Wong Yuk-shan introduced main functions of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as the UGC) and the Research Grants Council. The Research Grants Council is the academic research funding organization in Hong Kong. The scope of its responsibilities is to advise the Hong Kong SAR Government on the academic research needs of universities through the UGC, and to provide funding and scholarship schemes for various types of research in universities, amounting to HKD 2.36 billion for the period 2022-2023. The Research Grants Council has several research grants schemes, especially the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme and the Post-doctoral Fellowship Scheme, which are open to the world and support 300 doctors and 50 post doctors to study and begin their research and development in Hong Kong each year. And the Research Grants Council has also established the Collaborative Research Fund to encourage the interdisciplinary research cooperated by several scholars. President Li Lu introduced the basic situation of our university, focusing on the construction of our high-level talent teams, the cooperation and communication with the universities in Hong Kong in recent years, as well as the work and achievements of the university on the cross-discipline construction of big health, whole person and full life cycle. He hoped that the Research Grants Council would help and support the scholars of Zhejiang Shuren University to actively cooperate with the scholars of Hong Kong on basic and applied research with high academic value.

At noon, accompanied by Dr. Lee Hoey, the member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, President Li Lu and other visitors also visited the Legislative Council of Hong Kong to have a comprehensive understanding of the history, functions, and conference form of the Legislative Council, which gave the visitors a more intuitive and comprehensive understanding of the governance system of Hong Kong.
