The School of Art and Technology

The School of Art and Technology at Zhejiang Shuren University, formerly known as the School of Art, was founded in 2000. It currently has one key discipline of Zhejiang Province (Design Art) and one joint master’s degree program. Currently, the School has over 1,500 undergraduate students and offers five bachelor's degree programs: Art and Technology, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Product Design, and Arts and Crafts. Among them, Visual Communication Design is recognized as a First-Class Undergraduate Program in Zhejiang Province. Additionally, there are three programs designated as university-level applied programs, and one selected for the university’s international education development program.

In recent years, the School has actively pursued reform and innovation, with a strategic focus on two distinctive areas: Art and Technology and Intangible Cultural Heritage. Guided by an interdisciplinary approach that integrates art with technology, the School has organized a series of major academic events, including the 2023 International Symposium on Art and Technology and the 2024 Zhejiang Provincial Symposium on the Development of Art and Technology Programs in Higher Education. Through these efforts, it has gradually developed a distinctive model for cultivating high-level, application-oriented design professionals characterized by the integration of art and technology.

The School has a strong and well-qualified faculty. Leveraging academic resources from prestigious universities such as the China Academy of Art and Zhejiang University, it currently has 68 faculty and staff members. A significant proportion of the faculty holds senior professional titles, doctoral degrees, or dual-qualified (academic and industry) credentials, with over 70% possessing academic backgrounds from A+ ranked disciplines. Furthermore, the School actively promotes the "Industry Master Class" initiative by hiring industry masters as adjunct faculty. It also regularly organizes educational activities, including the "Stones from Other Hills" lecture series featuring distinguished external experts and the "Ph.D. Scholars in Residential Colleges" program. The School also actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation with universities in countries including Germany and the United Kingdom, providing students with opportunities to broaden their international perspectives and pursue diverse pathways for academic and personal development.

The School has achieved strong results in both research and teaching. Over the past five years, it has secured more than ten research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including projects funded by the China National Arts Fund and the National Social Science Fund of China under its post-funded program. Faculty members have published more than 50 papers in core academic journals and first-tier academic monographs, and have been granted more than 20 invention patents. Additionally, the School has completed industry-funded projects with total service funding exceeding RMB 60 million. Significant progress has likewise been made in teaching reform, with five Provincial First-Class Courses and more than ten teaching reform projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, contributing to the continuous improvement of teaching quality.

The School has also delivered remarkable outcomes in talent cultivation. Over the past five years, its faculty and students have received more than 300 awards in competitions at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including the Red Dot Design Award of Germany, the National Rural Revitalization Competition, and the National College Student Advertising Art Competition. Teams from the School have also won bronze awards twice in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition. The employment rate of undergraduate graduates has remained above 95%, while the entrepreneurship rate has reached 5%, reflecting the widely recognized quality of talent cultivation. Graduates have gone on to build careers in cutting-edge and high-tech industries such as digital interaction, AI creativity, intelligent hardware, smart spaces, and virtual entertainment, enjoying diverse and promising career development paths.

The School is also well equipped for experimental teaching and practical training. Supported by six laboratory projects funded by central and provincial government programs, it has established a wide range of specialized laboratories and studios for 3D printing, virtual digital interaction, ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, photography, and other areas, providing a comprehensive on-campus platform for practical learning. In addition, the School has established one industry college, the Zhejiang Shuren University Ruilin Light Environment Industry College, as well as more than 30 off-campus internship and practical training bases. Together, these resources form a multidimensional practice-based education system designed to strengthen students’ professional and hands-on skills and applied capabilities.
